PRESS RELEASE

SIRJA-LIISA VAHTRA (1973) is exhibiting her works under the title 3,14 in Hobusepea gallery from May 28, 2008.

Sirja-Liisa Vahtra has kept writing one and the same sentence since June 2006 - first lines were put down for the exhibition Õ><Ö in Tallinn City gallery in 2006; the sentence continued in Vahtra's personal exhibition Daily Lexis in Hobusepea gallery in October 2006.

Whereas in Tallinn City gallery introducing the sentence in the form of painting with visual-linguistic experiments and in Hobusepea gallery continuing with the same idea and experiment with the influences from Kazimir Malevich and Sigmund Freud, then this time in Hobusepea gallery the artist goes down a slightly easier path. Taking advantage from the fact that op art together with applied design and fashion industry have made their comeback, Vahtra has included Bridget Riley as a visiting artist in her present exhibition.

Leaning comfortably to Riley's wavy and vibrating black-and-white flows of stripes with mathematical patterns, Vahtra has reversed the geometrical figures. Perceptual-psychological illusions are created together with the pages from the birds' guidebook. Knock-knock.
