PRESS RELEASE
TJIKA REBANE will open her personal
exhibition "Notes" at Hobusepea gallery, Wednesday at
5pm, January 19, 2005.

With this exhibition, Tjika Rebane is about to end the long journey during
which she has been searching for meeting her audience year after year.
Rebane used to request her audience to fill in the blanks in the unfinished
sentences of her paintings, without any success - which resulted in starting
with a new painting, declaring the previous one invalid. According to
the artist, she has heaved herself up to the level where the meeting point
could be determined also by independent individualists, the structural
peculiarities being simplicity, even primitivity, and immovable conventionality,
the result being the collective intersection of ancient substance possessing
a great potential to grow. As strange as it might sound.
At the intersection of the roads both taken and untaken, Rebane mixes
the new and the old for the last time, playing with the pun that she masters
and blending meanings just like the dominos. Instead of the impenetrable
and senseless blather, this will result in sadness that is deceitfully
wrapped up in an optimistic package. The hands broken by despair and sadness
have been invited to conjure up in front of the audience.

Everything is seemingly in perfect order,
thus the walls are echoing back eulogy, honour and prize. Despite all
this, the artist herself is giving up the ghost, crushed by the degradation
of the surrounding world and starving.
